Bienvenue à Holy Redeemer! Holy Redeemer School is a K-9 located in Spaniard's Bay, approximately 80 kilometers from St. John's, NL, Canada. The school is operated by the Eastern School District. There are approximately 350 students and 23 staff in our school serving several communities in the Spaniard's Bay area.  We are also registered in the Canadian Schools Online Directory.

Computer Use

We have an Acceptable Use Policy for those who use computers at Holy Redeemer Elementary.

FOOTWEAR AND CLOTHING

We would like to bring to the attention of parents the issues of the footwear and clothing requirements for our school. First of all we require for use in the gym a pair of sneakers or track shoes that are not used outside and that have non-marking soles. It is important to have the appropriate footwear in the gym to prevent injuries. We allow students in our school to wear footwear other than sneakers, however, the only requirement we have is that they be of a non-skid and non-marking type. With respect to clothing for the gym, students in Grade 4 - 9 are expected to wear shorts and a shirt, and proper footwear. Students in the primary grades have a more relaxed rule regarding gym clothes. They are not required to change clothing for gym periods, but are required to have the proper footwear. As it relates to clothing throughout the school, there is no specific school code or uniform required for students. As a school, we do however require that students not wear shirts with slogans that promote items such as alcohol, cigarettes, etc. Nor do we allow shirts that use profane or suggestive language in any way.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and students that ONLY GRADE 7,8, and 9 STUDENTS are permitted to leave the school grounds. Under no circumstances are any other students permitted to leave the school grounds to go to Petro Canada or Baccalieu Trail Drug Store, etc., unless a parent comes to the school to check them out.

SCHOOL CLOSING PROCEDURE

Please be advised that effective immediately the following procedure will be in place for school closings or delays:

  • If possible an announcement will be made on CHVO by 7:00 a.m. for the following schools:

St. Peter's, Upper Island Cove

Holy Redeemer, Spaniard's Bay

Coley's Point Primary, Coley's Point

Amalgamated Academy, Bay Roberts

Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts

All Hallows, North River

  • The announcement will likely indicate one of the following conditions:
  •
    • schools in this system will close for the day;
    • schools will be closed this morning with further announcement at approximately 10:30 a.m. If schools reopen in the afternoon, Holy Redeemer will reopen at 12:25 p.m. with buses beginning their runs at approximately 11:50 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

NOTE: Please note that even if school is open, it is your decision to send or not to send your child if the weather conditions in your area are, in your opinion, unsuitable.

  • If schools have to close at any time during the day, separate closing will occur, for HOLY REDEEMER the procedure will be as follows:
  •
    • A decision is made by the administration to close the school after consultation with other personnel and only if conditions are (or are likely) to deteriorate.
    • An announcement is telephoned or faxed to Radio station CHVO.
    • The bus contractors will be called.
    • Students will prepare to leave by getting homework assignments and putting on clothing, etc.
    • Once the buses arrive, students will be dismissed from class to go directly on the bus. Students who walk will be dismissed at this time.

There may be times throughout the school year when school may have to close without prior notice. In the event that children have to leave school early due to bad weather or any other emergency circumstances, it is critically important that PARENTS MAKE ARRANGEMENTS IN ADVANCE of such incidents to have someone responsible for their child or children if they cannot be home.

We will make every effort to allow students to use the telephone in emergency situations. Unfortunately, we have two lines and IT MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE FOR ALL STUDENTS TO GET USE OF THE TELEPHONE.

If there are any changes made to the above procedure, you will be notified in a future edition of the Thursday Tribune.

PRIMARY STUDENTS

For safety reasons, primary children MUST have a note signed by parents if they are going to someone else's house after school. Additionally, parents are asked NOT to bring lunches to the classrooms before 12:08 p.m. since this caused disruptions to students. (For Elementary and Intermediate Divisions, you are asked not to bring lunches to the classrooms before 11:45 a.m.)

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS - View Behavior Code

At Holy Redeemer we have a Student Behavior Code Handbook. We expect the best from all students in terms of behavior. Rough play, running in the corridors, etc. are things that we really encourage students not to do as they invariably lead to injury. We ask that all parents discuss these issues at home. We ask that you particularly discuss the issue of wrestling, or as most students say "carrying on" in school. Most, if not all, of our injuries result from this kind of behavior and we ask that parents explain to students that it simply is not permissible in school.

This year we plan to expand our extracurricular program significantly. The extra-curricular program in our school is geared primarily to our intermediate students but also affects our elementary students. We consider the extra-curricular program a privilege and good performance from both an academic and behavioral point of view on the part of the students will dictate the degree to which they are permitted to become and stay involved in extra-curricular activities like sports, drama, etc. If a child fails to behave appropriately or fails to meet the expectations that teachers and parents have for the child academically, that privilege will be withdrawn.

INTERMEDIATE COMPREHENSIVE EXAMS

This year we will be following a three term approach for all students, including intermediate. Parents of Intermediate students are reminded that students will write comprehensive exams in June. Please encourage your students to develop good study habits all through the year as they are responsible for all work that is covered for the year. We would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every student well in their exams, and their activities throughout the year and encourage them to be the best they can be.

SCHEDULES

Following are list of items which include the daily bell schedule and holiday schedule. You will note that our day begins at 8:30 a.m. We ask that NO STUDENTS BE SENT, DROPPED OFF, OR ALLOWED TO COME TO SCHOOL PRIOR TO 8:15A.M. There is no scheduled supervision prior to this time, and we cannot ensure the safety of your child if they are in school prior to this time. The bell schedule, as you will note, is slightly different for primary students than for elementary and intermediate students, particularly during the lunch break.

TELEPHONE USE

At this time we would like to remind students to keep the use of the office telephone to a minimum. As you know, if you have ever tried to reach the school, most times the lines are kept busy. If you child is sick, or if there is any other emergency, they are urged to come to the office to use the phone. Otherwise, you should provide your child with some quarters to use the pay phone in the main entrance. We would appreciate it if you would please review this rule with your child.

LOCKER USE AND PERSONAL PROPERTY

Students in Elementary and Intermediate are provided with lockers for storage of their possessions. Please encourage your child to use their lockers effectively, especially for storage of valuable items and to keep their lockers locked and not to share their combination with anyone. Also, students are not permitted to bring expensive items and money to school, as we cannot take responsibility for such items. Under no circumstances should students leave valuable items or money in their clothing in the change rooms, for gym class especially.

MEDICATIONS

At this time we would like to stress to parents that under no circumstances are students permitted to have any medication whatsoever in their possession in school. If students are to take prescribed medication during school hours, we must have a signed consent form on file. These forms are available from the office. When the form has been signed and returned to the school, the medication, in its original bottle with its original label, must be kept in the office and administered by a teacher. Otherwise, a family member must come to the school and administer the medication. If there are any problems or questions regarding this policy, feel free to contact the school.

PARKING & PICK UP/DROP OFF AREA NOTES

Parents are again reminded that there are designated drop-off and pick-up areas for students in the front of the school. Movement of vehicles outside of these areas, especially the east entrance (facing O'Neill's Garden Center), is extremely dangerous and is restricted to special transportation vehicles and emergency vehicles. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.

PARENT ORIENTATION NIGHT

Parent Orientation is normally scheduled  after supper for one night in September. Please join us for this informative, yet informal evening.

FREE INTERNET ACCESS

Eastern School District is pleased to offer to the public access to the Internet through our new top of the line Kiosk Computer. The Kiosk Computer is available to the general public to provide them the ability to check the job bank, use e-mail, edit and print resumes and to explore the Internet. This is a great opportunity for the community and we would like to encourage the general public to take some time and visit these sites. Eastern School District would like to have our school and community working together to bring us into the future and want to welcome the general public into our schools.
